Taiwan Conflict with China

The conflict between Taiwan and the People's Republic in China is (PRC) the top main source of headlines and discussion in Taiwan's Politics. As explained in other sections, Communist China refuses to maintain any diplomatic relations with a country that establishes any diplomatic relation with Taiwan also referred as Republic of China. So far Taiwan is contesting and constantly requesting active participation in the United Nations, all those attempts have been blocked and boycotted by the PRC. Hence Taiwan status has it only maintaining relations to only a few countries in the world, mainly in Latin America and Africa.

The argument recently heated when in 2005, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld stated that 'Taiwan is a sovereign nation'. Also, Rumsfeld stated that the U.S. Had legal obligations to assist Taiwan in the event of an attack by mainland China. Since then tension simmered down, but the discussion continues and the Taiwan Government still is struggling with the limitations imposed by the PRC.
