As you might know already, the Asian Continent's history, specially on the 20th Century, was a turbulent one, and Taiwan had it's share of events that helped shaped the country that it is today. The main controversial discussion about the political status, if it should remain independent as territory of the Republic of China (ROC), become unified with the territories now governed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), or formally declare independence and become the Republic of Taiwan. This debate is one of the most fervently discussed issues. And it causes a great deal of controversy the separation between the ROC and the PRC, causing either of the two to sever relations with a country that establishes relations with the other.

It is important to note that the qualities of life are outstanding, for example, Infant mortality is eight per 1000 live births (in the US that rate is 10 per 1000). Life expectancy is among the highest in the world and the nutritional level are among the best in Asia.

There are many problems today that are currently important issues that are the main challenges the authorities have to overcome. For example, even though the public health system is exceptional the sanitation services is an area that is currently undergoing much needed improvements. Also, there is currently a housing crisis, as a result of the rapid growing society, and lack of anticipation by previous administrations. In comparison to other rapid growing Asian countries the governments invested in housing development to assure shelter to the population. Perhaps the biggest social issue that the country faces is an inevitable clash of values. The values of family of community once dear and sacred to the Taiwanese people is suffering from an increasingly mentality of materialism and self-preservation. This has lead to an increase in criminality, substance abuse and juvenile delinquency.
