Study in Taiwan testimonials
'I've been living in Taiwan for over a year and a half, studying Chinese and seeking my bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. I was always intrigued about the Chinese culture, and ever since my arrival I was amazed of the contrast and differences between here and back home. At first, I must admit, I had a bit of a hard time adjusting, but after a while, I found myself making friends in school and really getting a complete education. I miss home a lot, but here I feel welcomed and comfortable. I understand now how there are many foreigners staying here indefinitely.' -Luke Degrassi, Stockton, CA'My two years of Mandarin Chinese definitely gave me an edge over most of the other students when it came to Chinese. Some difficulties were found when I discovered the odd Taiwanese accent and their use of traditional characters, but it did give me a solid understanding of grammar and writing. At the end of the day, I was mostly provided with basic communications. I still have a bit to go before I can have a ‘normal social’ conversation with a local Taiwanese. Students, of course, learn there are other ways of speaking, living, learning and thinking when they live for a year in a culture other than that of the Midwestern United States. But I think they also grow from the experience of having to adapt to new ways and to solve problems without their parents right there to help. There are unique challenges to being a youth exchange student. I always tell students that once you have been a youth exchange student you are strong enough to tackle any challenge.' -Peter McMillan, Salt Lake City, UT
'I received a TECO Huayu Enrichment Scholarship and spent six months studying in Taiwan. I specifically chose to study in Taiwan because the great reputation that many of the language programs there have. Additionally, I was concerned about finding a program where I could study at the advanced level. Finally, I have a family with small children and felt comfortable taking them to a developed country like Taiwan because of the excellent health care facilities and family friendly environment. The generous scholarship from TECO and excellent language program at National Taiwan University made it possible for me to accomplish my language learning goals. After completion of my studies I was able to land a Chinese language teaching position at a university and currently teaching beginning and intermediate level Chinese language classes.' -Anne Cozza, Ph.D. Boise, ID
